Inexpensive wood pallet garden bench: child’s play ?!
There are several ways to make an inexpensive garden bench out of wooden pallets. It all depends on your desires and the space available to you. Taking apart or cutting up a wooden pallet to make a garden bench is not a necessary step in and of itself. The standard size of a pallet is between 80 and 100 cm to 120 cm. If this size is right for you, then there is no need to cut it. Be aware that this will make a fairly large bench !
If you have the tools and the desire, here is a project DIY cheap garden bench in pallets. It will only take you a few hours to complete it. If you are already an experienced handyman, you can even manage to make it in less than two hours !
How to make an inexpensive garden bench from wood pallet
The final dimensions of the wooden garden bench below are 90 cm for the seat and 120 cm for the backsplash.
The first step is to cut out the pallets for the seat. The creators of this garden bench, we kept the length of the pallet of 1.20 m and we opted for a width of 40 cm. The pallet they used was three feet wide. Divided into two, we get two pieces per pallet. 4 in all are needed for a 45 cm high garden bench.
The backrest and armrests are indeed optional
For the backsplash, we take a whole pallet. Here, no need for cutting! The backsplash is indeed optional, it all depends on whether you want to have one or not.
For the seat, if you want to create a more comfortable seat, you can proceed as follows:
Remove the slats from the last seat plate. Then cut the panel to make a more comfortable seat of length 1.20 cm and width 50 cm. The width is larger in order to obtain an inclined backrest.
The armrests are also optional. To make them, we will use pieces of disposable pallets. We measure and cut the armrests. For a garden bench of these dimensions, you will need armrests with a width of 75 cm and height of 65 cm. To avoid cutting holes, remove the slats on the pieces to be discarded and add them to the sides of the armrests !
Woven wooden garden bench: elegant and very original
You are probably familiar with the wooden pallet garden bench and the DIY reclaimed wood garden bench. Here is a different and very original woven bench project that will be a change from classic garden bench DIY projects.
How to make a cheap woven garden bench with a wooden base
For its production Brittany from the HACK THIS blog used the redwood. Redwood wood is known for its resistance to insects and fungi. It is therefore perfect for garden furniture, knowing that the latter is often exposed to the risk of being damaged quickly. Redwood wood is also very soft and therefore easy to work with. You can find and buy it on the ftfi site or on the presto-bois site. Finally, you can of course opt for another resistant wood species: pine, teak, douglas and others. If you buy it in a specialized store, do not hesitate to seek the advice of an advisor.
You have the choice to cut or not to cut the wooden cleats. Basically Brittany decided to use her saw and miter saw for this. Here are the dimensions she got:
- 2 wooden battens of 115 cm (50 × 50)
- 4 wooden strips of 47cm (50 × 50)
- 2 wooden battens of 36 cm (50 × 50)
- 2 bundles of clothesline (each 60 m) plus a spool of cord
Be aware that the dimensions may vary according to your desires. To assemble all the cleats and legs of your bench, use a Kreg Jigs. The Kreg Jigs is a DIY assembly system that makes DIY projects quick and easy. Easy to use even by beginners, once you buy it your DIY projects will become a breeze !
The final stages of the realization of the woven wooden bench
Here is the result you should get after assembling all the wooden cleats:
Then apply a wood conditioner. This is necessary in order to protect your furniture. Once your timber construction has dried, it’s time to put on the clothesline.
Weaving is important in order to obtain a solid footing. Don’t hesitate to pull hard! Here’s how to do it:
As you will see Brittany decided to use this garden bench as a living room table. You can do the same if you don’t have one. This elegant bench will fit very well into your living room or garden furniture. It’s up to you to decide where it will go best !
Second model of DIY woven bench at a low price
The very last DIY project to present to you and him too, originally designed to serve as an entrance bench. However, it can blend in very well with your garden or patio exterior. Just place it in a shady corner: on your patio or under a pergola. Its manufacture is simple. Its clean design is easy to match with any style. Its designer Caitlin made it to install it in her hallway and use it as a shoe cabinet..
To create this woven bench, she used jute instead of the clothesline.
Here is the material and tools necessary for its realization:
- three wooden cleats
- four table legs (or similar cleats)
- two rolls of jute rope
- cotton rope (optional)
- fixing nails
In short, you can proceed in the same way as Brittany and make the wooden base of your bench with cleats or reclaimed wood. The main thing is to measure the dimensions correctly in order to obtain a bench suitable for your outdoors. The big difference of this woven bench from the previous one is that here we have a storage space below. To create it you will need five additional cleats.
The steps to follow to make this inexpensive and very chic garden bench
To create the exact same bench as in the photo, you will need 2 x 127 cm wooden cleats, 2 30.5 cm cleats, 3 98 cm cleats, and 2 29 cm cleats. It is quite possible to vary the dimensions according to your wishes.
Use your drill to make holes the same size as the screws available. Drill at the end of each of the two 127 cm cleats. These holes will be used to attach the 30.5 cm pieces to the 127 cm pieces. After these steps you will have your bench base made.
Take the next step, weaving. Secure the rope using the fixing nails as shown in the photo below. Do not hesitate to pull hard to get a solid footing. You will need at least two rolls of jute rope. As you will see in the picture, the cotton rope serves a purely aesthetic purpose.
To fix the legs of your bench, you will need to make holes above the 127 cm wooden cleats. You can see how in the image above.
And the last step: admire your beautiful creation !
